This delightful bud vase (SH3) was designed by Steve and Terry.
At just over 10 cm tall it was intended to complement the
standard SH2 vase, which is a fracton shorter. Both are superb
pieces of china, exclusively made for Steve and Terry by a
craftsman who has years of experience in the field.
For
his first design on this shape, Terry wanted to return to
a bird theme, having previously concentrated on mammals since
launching his own brand. He set out to create a lighter feel
for this piece in keeping with its designation as a bud vase.
The
Grey Wagtail is a species that breeds at the waters edge,
often by running water but increasingly alongside ponds which
support enough insects and where suitable crevices are available
for nests. This gave Terrry the opportunity to have two main
subjects in the design, the bird and some open Water-lilies
(Water-lilies opening each morning as the sun falls on them)).
Adding further interest is a wonderfully executed Mayfly.
The
design is tied together in a water's edge setting with a weeping
willow branch providing cover for the Grey Wagtail as it watches
its prey! Terry has used a male Wagtail in summer plumage
-hence "Summer Wagtail". The black throat reverts
to white in winter and is not present on females or juveniles.
This
is a beautiful bud vase with a real feel of summer about it.
