For his first design for 2010 Terry took up the challenge
of painting a scene on the new shape vase (SH5 - approx. 80
mm x 80 mm). This is an unusual shapefor china and one which
requires considerable skill from Mark to make - he only does
or or two at a time!
It
provides a surprisingly large, almost spherical surface, which
presents significant design challenges for the artist. Such
a highly curved surface creates a good area on which to paint
but also problems of perspective, as the surface can be viewed
from so many different angles.
After
a few false starts, and quite a bit of rubbing out, Terry
created a wonderful and very clever scene. He wanted to portray
a group of Badgers on a woodland edge, while at the same time
capturing those first moments as they emerge from the set
and cautiously "survey the scene" to see if the
ground is clear for a night's feeding. The scene being surveyed
here, as the light fades, is reminiscent of Terry's favourite
places in the Cotswolds.
As
you rotate the vase we see one Badger, emerging through a
hole in a fence, checking out the view to the left, a middle
one looking towards the viewer, while a third cautiously pokes
its head from beneath the roots of a tree and scans the scene
to the right, all from the "edge of the wood".
