For his first design for 2011 Terry returned to the challenging
SH5 shape, which is almost spherical.
He
wanted to produce a companion piece to the popular Edge of
the Wood, featuring another mammal. He chose one that hasn't
appeared on any of his previous china pieces, or even in his
work for Moorcroft Enamels.
This
Otter family make a charming study. Mum, poised on a rock
at the water's edge, tries to tempt her two grown up off-spring
into the water. As always, Terry has risen magnificently to
the challenge of a difficult subject - Otter coats are not
the easiest subject for an artist to tackle.
In
the 1970's Otters had disappeared from much of the countryside
in England and Wales. Their recovery has been one of the conservation
successes of the last thirty years and they can now be found
on most river systems throughout the country - although seeing
them is another matter!
