A group
of Meerkats is known collectively as a gang. Steve's "Gang"
comprises a small group of families with youngsters.
These
cheeky members of the mongoose family originate from southern
Africa and are always popular in Wildlife Parks. While one
or two keep watch for predatory birds by balancing on hind
legs and tail, the others scurry around foraging. At daylight
they will all stand to face the sun, as they have a patch
of skin with little hair that absorbs heat quickly on cold
desert mornings. The dark eyes act like sunglasses to reduce
the glare of the sun later in the day.
This charming
piece further demonstrates Steve's versatility with subjects.
This was a surprisingly difficult piece for Steve to paint,
with each individual Meerkat taking a lot of fine detail.
