Steve
was very pleased with this piece and the internal painting
is quite stunning, but he did not have a name in mind while
designing it. He wanted to use Greenfinches as the subject
and felt their plummage would show best on a late summer background.
Of all the finches, Greenfinch can handle larger seeds like
bramble and rose-hip, so to add movement Steve chose to create
a huge wow factor by portraying on the inside of the vase
a bird attacking the fruit in "flight" - a daunting
task, but one that was well worth the challenge involved.
The ripe berries led to the addition of the butterflies on
the lid as they also like to drink the sugar oozing from the
fruit. A little space was just right for a Bumblebee to give
some late summer atmosphere. This was a fortunate decision
as it finally gave rise to an interesting name for the piece!
